I do have Rick Steves Provence and the French Riviera guidebook but I'm trying to narrow it down a bit. Anyone have recommendations for a hotel or great resturant in Nice? Also, do you recommend a day trip to Monaco? Thanks

I prefer staying at a hotel near the train station, mostly because I don't like having to haul my luggage all across town. When I was in Nice this spring the center of town was torn up for installing a tram-line. You can walk to the Old Town, downhill and nearer the sea. It is the most interesting part of Nice. There are lots of restaurants and other eating choices there. Check RS book for that. I prefer just walking around and finding a place that apppeals at that moment. Monaco is intersting and can be reached in a few minutes, for a few Euros, by train. Buses run there but take much longer. I went there once; I'm glad I saw the casino, but didn't hike up to the palace. If you take the bus, you may see some other town you'd like to visit. Eze is popular.
yes a day trip to compact Monaco is perfect and reached easily by train. I was in FR in Aug and saw Antibes, Villefranche, Nice (bustling & large), Monaco plus some hilltowns overlooking the FR. ea city is very diff from ea other. you won't be disppointed. next time I stay in Villefrance.
When I went on the RS Paris and South of France tour, we stayed a couple of miles east of Nice in Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is much quieter, has a smaller beach and is easily accessible to both Nice and Monaco by bus.
After the tour, I stayed right in Nice at Hotel Garibaldi - I had a beautiful room with a sunny balcony. It was a 10 minute walk to the beach and there is a pedestrian street on the sea-side of it that came alive at night. Everyone was eating dinner outside and Rick's recommendations are great.
Thanks for all the great suggestions.
