Will be arriving about 8 in evening by rail. Will be renting a car the next morning. Looking for basic place to stay for 2 "seniors" to stay 1 night.
There is an Ibis hotel right at the train terminal. You go out the terminal front door, turn right and go in the hotel door. If you look left before turning right you will be awed by the cathedral.
Thanks. Looks great. We will get rental car just down the street next morning. Checked rates and found breakfast buffet at 10 Euro pp. No idea of meal costs. Sounds reasonable but is there better deal like in the train station or SE toward the rental car I see 5 "food & drink" from Starbucks to Mr Bock or "Potato Point"
There are going to be plenty of bakeries around, both along the streets and in the train station. You probably won't get out of Starbucks for much under 10 euro per person either. 10 euro sounds like a lot, but in this kind of situation, I like to come down and get some coffee/cappuccino in the morning and take back to my room while I get ready, then I may have another couple of cups during breakfast. Once you pay for 2-3 cups of coffee in Germany, you are probably close to that 10 euro point.
I can only speak about the Ibis hotels in Dresden (haven't stayed at the one in Cologne). While €10 (about $13) might seem high for breakfast, it's an all-you-can-eat buffet, with a wide variety of items (besides the expected carbs and caffeine, there are meats, some fish, salads, fruits, and even such things as lactose-reduced milk and cheese). Unless you really want just a roll and coffee, it's a good deal. Between this and the convenience of not having to go outside, we ended up buying this breakfast every morning, and I would do the same again in the future.
Every Ibis hotel we have stayed in charges for breakfast, some times quite a bit, but then I'm used to a piece of sausage, eggs, and toast for two bucks.
