Has anyone here actually stayed at this hotel? The TA reviews are mostly glowing, but some people express concern with the location. One lady described the area as similar to Haight-Ashbury in SFwhere I probably wouldn't choose to stay! Any thoughts about the locale appreciated.
The area that the hotel is in is totally safe. It is in the Spittelberg area which has some of the oldest surviving buildings in Vienna. It is also close to an excellent local restaurant called Gasthaus Spatzennest. Near the area is also the Witwe Bolte which has some very good traditional Austrian Cuisine. You are in easy walking distance to the Ringstrasse and city center also. Vienna is one of the safest cities in the world, I would not worry at all about the area the hotel is in.
I will echo what the others said. We visited Christmas Markets in December and Spittelberg was one of our favorite areas. Hotel Alstadt looks to be about 2 blocks from Spittelberg, certainly a decent area. We had a good, economical lunch at the Putzer Bräu in Spittelberg.
Nothing like Haight-Ashbury - what a weird comparison. The Spittelberg area is a cluster of cobble-stoned streets which are quaint and historic (I would liken it to Elfreth's Alley in Philadelphia). Burggasse, Siebensterngasse and Neubaugasse are all great areas to stroll and shop nearby. It is very convenient to the MuseumsQuartier; about a 10 minute walk to the Ring and very convenient to trams and the subway. I would pick this location over the tourist hustle and bustle of the first district in a heartbeat.
