I have received a couple of suggestions from people regarding places to stay during my trip to Barcelona next month. The prices are pretty reasonable for a hostel but I have a couple of concerns: I am in my early 30's and want to be able to get some sleep at night- are people generally respectful/quiet? Is it safe- meaning is theft a problem and are the rooms safe? I've never stayed at a hostel before but I have to because the hotels are a little out of my budget. I would love to know people's experiences, particularly when traveling in Barcelona/Madrid. Thanks.
My wife and I stay in hostels (20 so far) when we can because they are family friendly. Some have priavte rooms with private baths.
You don't have to settle for a dorm bunk. You can rent a private room. We have never stayed in one where we felt any danger. Many remind me of a typical family hotel in the U.S.
And never been deprived of sleep; but then we have not slept in a dorm in our 20 stays. I suggest you try one; if you don't like it you can move across town to another in Barcelona.
I have only stayed at one hostel in Barcelona. It seemed very safe to me--there was a large locker for your bag. You can usually check to see online if they have security lockers. It was very loud, but I think it was due to the hostel selected. I picked a cheap one right on the beach, so there were a lot of people coming in throughout the night...and that was noisy. At almost every other hostel I stayed at, everyone was quiet. I never felt unsafe, and I never felt like I lost sleep. Hostelworld has lots of reviews and security/noise ratings on lots of hostels--you could preview where you want to stay on there.
I stayed in a great hostel in Barcelona called the Ithaca! It was very centrally located by the cathedral in the Bari Gotic. The vibe was mellow, it was clean, had large private lockers for your bag. The artwork was funky. Close to everything. I really thought it was great. I booked it through hostel world. I think!! Happy travels.
We stayed at HostalHill in Barcelona. It is a bit out of the way, but was clean and quiet, if you book a room in the back. Our room had a shower and a sink, but the toilet was down the hall. Breakfast was a chit from the hostal for food at a restaurant across the street. Food was fresh that way. Subway was across the intersection. Bus Tourista was a 10-12 block walk to the Church of the Familia. The bus was across the street. Buy the two day ticket. Way cheaper that way.
