Honfleur, a place to stay?

My family will be spending two or three nights in Honfleur. We have been told it is a good spot to stay to see Normandy. Does anyone have any accommodation suggestions? We have three children ages 13, 11 and 9. Thanks for the ideas.

Hotel Dauphin in Rick's guide is nice. We stayed there back in 2003.

Cheval Blanc, right by the tidal gate to the old harbor, not sure you can stuff five in a room.

You can get two rooms at the ETAP, a ten minute walk to old area, for about sixty bucks per night per room.

Honfleur is one of my favorite towns in northern France and I duck in there every chance I get, even if only for an hour or two.

BUT, it stinks as a base for touring the rest of Normandy. Rouen is more than an hour away, so is Bayeux. The road to neither is interesting enough to drive twice (round trip) for an hour.

Normandy is best done with a couple of stops. Maybe drive up from Paris, see Rouen, etc, spend the night in Honfleur, then move on to the west for the next night.

I agree with Ed. Honfleur is a wonderful town, but not a great base for touring Normandy. Bayeux is a much better location. It's also a very nice town, though not as picturesque as Honfleur.

Michelle, Honfleur was one of our favorite towns when we toured France last year. We stayed at the Hotel Monet, a "Rick Pic", and really enjoyed it. We used Honfleur as a base for exploring Normandy, but it is not central to the area.

I went to Honfleur in October 2009 with my husband and 2 other couples. We were delighted with our B&B...La Cour Sainte Catherine. It was a Rick Steves recommendation. It was immaculate, cozy, comfortable and centrally located. The grounds are lovely, and the owners are very friendly and accommodating. The price at the time was 75 euros for a double room and 95 for a larger room. Check out the comments on TripAdvisor. Honfleur is a lovely town.

We just returned from France - intended to spend 2 nights in Honfleur at the Hotel du Dauphin. We ended up spending 5 nights there when my husband got sick and had to be hospitalized. The people at the Hotel du Dauphin were incredible! They helped me in cancelling and rebooking for our change in plans and in many other ways. I know they have a suite which accommodates quite a few people; however, we preferred the location of Bayeux for the tour of the Normandy beaches.
