Honeymoon to Germany/Austria

I've briefly been to Munich before, but my fiance has not and I think he'll love that area. We are looking for a little bit of luxury on a budget. We will likely fly into Frankfurt (cheaper) and drive to Munich, Salzburg and Vienna. Any suggestions on itineraries, hotels, etc??

Joy, I recommend you do the math and compare the complete trip costs instead of just looking for the cheapest flight. The pro about driving from Frankfurt to Munich is you can stop at Würzburg, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl or even do a one-day side trip to the Rhine river gorge or other romantic places like that. The con is: $8.95 (May 28th) per gallon of either gas or diesel. Diesel gets better milage but still... Taking the train from Frankfurt to Munich may be cheaper but doesn't allow you to do all those romantic stops...

Hello Joy. I was there, and I loved that area. First : read about Munich and Bavaria and Salzburg and Vienna in the book "Rick Steves' GERMANY & AUSTRIA, 2008". Second : If you want to visit King Ludwig's Castle Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, reserve a ticket for that before you leave Florida. And try to reserve a room in a B & B ("Zimmer") located within walking distance of Neuschwanstein, for two nights. Ask for a room that has a private bathroom. If those rooms are not available, choose a hotel in Fussen (not the lowest priced hotel) mentioned in Rick Steves' book. Third : I am not aware that having luxury on a budget in Vienna is possible, but if you go to Vienna, visit Schunbrunn Palace. And, a night at Halstatt in Austria is highly recommended (ride in a train and boat).

Joy, although I agree with Ron that Rick's book is a good place to start, I would suggest supplementing your research on Bavaria with other sources, such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. As much as I like Rick's style, I found that for an area so full of wonders and so many great out-of-the-way towns villages and hamlets, his book is not adequate by itself. For a cheaper place to stay in Munich (can't promise luxury , though), try Googling "Pension Seibel". Also- don't take a car into Munich. Trust me on this, don't do it! Let me ask this, what time of year do you plan to visit, and are you restricting yourself to the cities, or checking out the Bavarian hinterlands as well?

Oh, one more thing- I'm going to Vienna on my honeymoon too. Let us know if you find a good restaurant for two newlyweds...

We just arrived home from 12 days in Munich and Fussen. We flew into Frankfort and we're sorry we did because it seemed like a long train with nothing to see in between as we were riding in the train. Munich was wonderful. We were there for 2 days. We went by train to Fussen. Fussen is within 2 miles of King Ludwigs castle. We rented bikes and rode up there. We stay in a B&B called Beim Landhannes. We had a balcony that overlooked the Alpsand private bathroom. It was a 1 mile into Fussen but what a beautiful area. We loved it
