Honeymoon in Germany - May 16 - 30

Hi, all. We are leaving for our honeymoon in less than three weeks and still do not have our trip planned! Looks like we'll be playing most it by ear but I wanted to get some suggestions on a great place to start out. We're flying into Frankfurt and plan to rent a car. Can anyone recommend a romantic destination to start out in? We wanted to start out with Baden-Baden to visit the mineral springs but the horse races will be going on then. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

How about Bacharach or somewhere along the Rhine... Its close by, you can relax a bit and get your legs back under you before setting off to see other places.

I was in Germany last May with my husband and we spent some time along the Mosel River (and the Rhine, too, but we personally preferred the Mosel. It's a sleepy little river that winds through acres and acres of wine grape fields and has many small, quaint towns along the way).

We felt it was very romantic.

Another thing we really enjoyed was our hotel room in Zell (our home base). It was the Hotel Weinhaus Mayer and we had a balcony overlooking the river. One night we bought a bottle of wine from the hotel (everyone sells wine here - it's wine country, after all! In fact, our room had wine glasses and corkscrew for just such an occasion) and sat on the balcony around sunset, watching the river traffic and swans float by and pedestrians strolling the riverfront. It's one of my fondest memories of that trip.

Not too long ago someone posted comments about a castle in Wurzburg - Hotel Schloss Steinburg. I have never been there but the post prompted me to look up the website. It looks wonderful. Wurzburg would not be too far outside of Frankfurt and the hotel looks like a wonderful place to begin your honeymoon. Enjoy whatever you do!

The Rhine and Mosel rivers are more romantic than the Romantic Road or Baden Baden, IMO. I'd head there. Spend a night in Oberwesel's "Auf Schoenburg" Castle - a real treat with an amazing view. (A car makes coming and going from this castle during the day much easier.) There are dozens of wineries to visit, villages with outdoor cafes, and other castles you can tour (Burg Eltz, Marksburg, and Reichsburg in Cochem, one of the most attractive towns in the region.) If you stay in Cochem, you'll have good access to most towns in both regions, including Bad Bertrich, a nearby spa town (which may compensate somewhat for not visiting Baden Baden.)

"Happy Mosel" - an auto-free day of biking and rollerblading along the Mosel River that stops all car traffic on the main route between Koblenz and Trier, roughly - takes place on May 30. You might wish to visit the region early in your stay and avoid the area on the 29th and 30th, especially if you're driving to the airport on the 30th. Over 100,000 visitors are expected, and they'll take up all the available rooms and drive up prices.

I'd suggest seeing some of Bavaria after that. Look into the alpine towns of Berchtesgaden, Mittenwald, and Oberstdorf for starters to see whether they interest you. The whole region is quite romantic.

My husband and I are romantics. We went to Germany about 10 years ago, and the most romantic place we went to was Rothenburg Ob De Tauber. That was actually the first place we went. We are planning on going back May 19 and will be making Rothenburg one of our stops. It is a walled medieval city - absolutely beautiful and romantic!

Both Rothenburg on der Tauber and the Rhine (Bacharach) are very romantic! You could start along the Rhine and work your way down to southern Germany, which is beautiful and romantic! I have to say that I don't think you can go wrong...I've spent a couple vacations in Germany and have yet to end up somewhere I didn't like!!

My husband and I did our honeymoon in Germany almost 3 years ago! We followed the Romantic Road from Frankfurt to Rothenburg which was so charming, then on to Schwangau (to see Neuschwanstein) and Oberammergau, on to Munich, and we did 2 more weeks in Austria and the Czech Republic. It was fantastic! No matter where you go in Bavaria you will be warmly welcomed and have a wonderful time.
