Hi! My future husband and I will be traveling to Germany and Switzerland for our honeymoon in late June. We were thinking of spending a few days near Munich as a way to take some day trips. We like the idea of staying in a smaller town with a lot of ambiance as opposed to a big city like Munich. We had been looking at Bad Tolz but are concerned that, at one hour, it is too far away from Munich since we would have to take a private train up to Munich if we wanted to go anywhere. I would love to hear any suggestions. Thanks!! Gina
I really like the small town of Freising:
We have stayed twice at the Hotel zur Gred, which is an old fashion Gasthof with a decent restaurant. No elevators if that matters.
Freising is laced with waterways, has an attractive monastery and has adequate tourist services. It is connected to the Munich by both regional trains and the Sbahn. To travel to Munich from Freising, you can use either the Bayern-Ticket (to travel onto other Bavarian locations) or the Partner Day Card which is good to for traveling around greater Munich.
You might consider Tutzing or Starnberg on the Starnbergersee or Herrsching on Ammersee. They are closer and within the MVV (Munich metro district) so local tickets could be used (same with Freising). Herrsching is near Andechs monastery, a popular tourist site.
I thought Landsberg looked like an attractive town when I passed through briefly.
Hi Gina,
We also liked Friesing by Munich and would like to add (recommend) the old town of Erding.
Paul
I spent a night in Landsberg am Lech and liked it. It's pretty and has some vestiges of the former wall. However, for access to Munich, it is not within the Munich MVV boundaries, and thus costs a little more to get into Munich. However, it is fairly close, timewise.
You guys are amazing! Thank you. I am seriously looking at Landsberg but am having trouble finding a good place to stay. The place that I like the most, Stadthotel Garni Augsburger Hof seems great on its website but there isn't a lot about it online. My fiance is uncomfortable with the lack of info. Any suggestions? Thanks again!!
