Home base in Salzburg

We are spending 3.5 weeks (first time in Europe) traveling and want Salzburg to be one of our homebase destinations. We plan to be there for 4 days and hope to enjoy the town, the lake district, Munich, and nearby castles. We are on a budget and as well prefer to stay in a B&B or a small local hotel or guesthouse. Can anyone recommend from personal experience a good local place?

Thanks a bunch to all the contributors to this site - Michelle

Michelle, you cannot possibly go wrong with staying at Pension-Hotel Sallerhof. It is a B&B, new, free parking, 12 minutes by bus #25 from the center of Salzburg. The owner speaks excellent english and can get you tickets for events and shows. E-Mail: [email protected] or www.sallerhof.at The provide a huge free breakfast. Have fun, Dorsey

Hi Michelle
My wife and I stayed at Frau Ballwein's zimmer located on Moosstrasse. She speaks good english and is very helpful. Like most rooms a hearty breakfast is included. The bus stop is about 50 feet from her driveway and it is about a 15 minute ride to old town. The name and contact information is in
Rick's guide book. I am sure you will enjoy Salzburg. A good day trip if you have a car is to King Ludwig II's Pallace on an island on lake Chiemsee. It is about half way between Salzburg and Munich just off autobaun A8. It is not in Rick's guide book but is worth the trip during the warm season. In the garden there are several large fountains which only operate from spring through fall. We caught a boat at the town of Prien for the short ride to the pallace.

We would also highly recommend the Hotel Sallerhof. We loved our time there. The city bus picks up not far from the hotel and is about a 15 min. ride into town.

Hi Michelle,
If your heart is set on a fabulous old hotel in the Salzburg Altstadt, then for room accomodations and food, the above just can't be beat... [above URL]

Robert,
If I were you, I would visit my bank in Northern VA to make arrangements to obtain cash from ATM's in Europe.

In June we stayed 4 days at the Hotel Weisse Taube in old town and liked its accomodations and location. Contact info in RS's 2007 Best of Europe book and probably others as well.

We have stayed at Bloberger Hof, just outside the old town area-owners are wonderful, rooms outstanding, just across road from bus going directly to city center. have a marvelous time, Salsburg is wonderful

I will echo the Bloberger Hof. My wife and I stayed there last weekend for a few nights and loved it. Great rooms, good breakfast (included), in the quiet countryside, and we got a great 2-room suite (category A room - didn't see the category B rooms) for about what you'd pay for a cramped place in the oldtown. If you need to be in town, you'll want to find someplace else. But if you're not rushed, the bus ride into town is no problem, and cheap.
