We will be spending around 3 days in Brittany and are wondering what would be a good home base. We've only been to Dinan so far, but would like to see St. Malo and Carnac, and other highlights on the peninsula (Quimper and Brest, etc.). We'd prefer not to change hotels each day. Are there any recommndations for what's a good, central home base? Any favorite highlights of Brittany are welcome, too. Thanks!
Lauren, as the previous poster told you, St Malo and Carnac are quite far apart. My wife and I just returned from France and spent 6 days in Brittany - 3 in Auray (near Carnac) and 3 in Dinan. I think you'll need to make a decision on one area or the other - Brittany is simply too big for a central spot that in convenient to all areas.
Thanks, Will. I think we're gravitating toward spending a couple of nights in St. Malo and seeing the upper part of the peninsula and a couple of nights on the south side. There's not so much written about Brittany (which may be a good thing), but it makes it tougher to decide where to focus. We picked up the Rough Guide to Normandy and Brittany to help us get a description of towns. We love to wander and discover, but vacations are too short for us to be too unplanned.
