Home Base For Sightseeing w/Car: Mittenwald, Fussen, GaP, Oberammergau?.

We will be spending three days in this area, eventually ending up in Lindau. I have read the many posts about each of these places and all have their pluses and minuses. Mittenwald sounds wonderful but it seems to be at the end of the line, which means longish round trip drives. So I turn to the collective wisdom of RS pros for advice. Thanks, guys.

Hi mike, Even though Mittenwald is a bit less convenient than Garmisch (they're 20 min. apart), we love ending our days in charming Mittenwald. My choice, Mittenwald. Paul

All of these places are conveniently accessed by public transportation for less than the cost of a car rental. Personally, I would stay here, in Oberammergau. Oberammergau to Gap takes 43 min by bus. GaP to Mittenwald takes 22 minutes by regional train. Round trip fare from Oberammergau to GaP is 9,50/P by bus with an RVO Tagesticket, RT GaP to Mittenwald is 8,40€/P. A Werdenfels-Ticket allows you to travel between all of those places for 11,50€/day.

Mike- having a car in this area allows more flexibility. It is easy to park in these villages and you can come and go as you please without luggage concerns. GaP is my choice for a base because it is centrally located compared to the others, there is more to do, and there are more accommodation choices. Don't forget some of the other biggies in that area, Zugspitze, Ettal, Wieskirche, and Linderhof. You might even throw in Herrenchiemsee on your way to or from the GaP area if you have an extra 1/2 day...
Have a good trip...

GaP, for the reasons outlined earlier. Most central location, most lodging and dining options. Not quite as overwhelmingly cute as Mittenwald, but it's still a lovely town.

Thanks for the quick responses over the 4th of July. Paul, I lean toward Mittenwald for aesthetics but that extra 20 minutes each way each day (plus the gasoline) is a factor. Lee, you are the very best on how to train it and I'm going to be coming back to you for some advice. Like you, we prefer trains. And we'll most use trains except for 6 or 7 days. The railroad company should put you on retainer! You're its best salesman. Kenneth and Tom, I think we're going to go with your suggestion of GaP as it is about as central to the area as we can get. We'll "do" a day to the east, one into the Tirol and a final one to the west, then drop off the car. Thank you all so much for all your "old pro" help. I pay particular attention to your posts when I run across them at other threads. This is an amazing site.
