Hello, all I hope you can comment on our tentative itinerary & give some advice on holiday season travel. I know weather is unpredictable, But I want to make sure our plans make sense. My family (two older teens, husband, myself) is planning a trip in Austria & Germany. Teenage son is reasonably proficient in German. We're flying into Vienna, staying there (6 days) through Christmas. Christmas markets, lots of museums, walking around the city. Is a day trip to Melk do-able in the off season? Are there any other day trips you might advise at this time of year? Also, if you can recommend a restaurant that would be open Christmas day, we would be most grateful. Then Salzburg for (2?) days. Kind of the SOM tour stopover. Would Bavaria & mad King Ludwig's castles be a good stop in late December? Would driving through Bavaria to Munich be impractical? We could also go straight to Munich from Salzburg & arrange day trips from there. The guys fly home on Jan. 2nd & the lucky women go on to Italy for another 2 weeks (a different posting :)
Thanks for any feedback or ideas now is a good time to tweak our plans.
"Would Bavaria & mad King Ludwig's castles be a good stop in late December? " The castles are open all year, so if you're interested, go for it. But what do you mean by "Bavaria"? It's the single largest state in the German Federal Republic, it has several distinct cultural and climate regions. Is there one area in particular you have in mind? "Would driving through Bavaria to Munich be impractical? We could also go straight to Munich from Salzburg & arrange day trips from there." I'm not sure what you're getting at with that question.
