we're looking for a small town to spend 3 nights with our 2 teens in mid-July somewhere near Seville. we'd love to be in a beach area, but hope to avoid the really crowded areas. Or, possibly a hill town we could explore from. any suggestions?
I'm afraid that uncrowded, beach and July do not belong in the same sentence about Spain. But hopefully someone can give you some pointers.
The people I know in Sevilla all seem to head to the beaches in the Huelva area, about an hour west of the city on the Atlantic side. There are about 25 miles of beach all along here. One of the towns along there is Matalascañas...a fair amount of condo development there now, but apparently a fine boardwalk, beachside restaurants and bars, and the like. It's about 50 kilometers southeast of Huelva, and there are several buses a day between Sevilla and the town. Another popular destination is Punta Umbria, which is just west of Huelva....you can take buses from Sevilla to Huelva, then a 'local' bus to Punta Umbria.
With the oppressive heat and humidity in Sevilla during the summer, tens of thousands of people flock there on weekends....it'll be quieter during the week. Since August is when many Spanish people take their holidays, you should avoid the massive crowds. Be aware it will probably be breezier and a slight bit cooler than the beaches along the Costal del Sol...but less busy.
If you can find a recent posting from Liz, who lives in Sevilla, you might be able to send her a personal message asking for her recommendations.
As for hill town recommendations....Arcos, Zahara, Ronda.
thank you so much. I will definitely check out those towns. I see there are also beach towns near Cadiz. Any thoughts on that area as an option?
I'm told that the Huelva stretch is more family-oriented....farther south, Cadiz to Tarifa, is more singles.
I've noticed you have a lot of insightful posts about Spain. We've got 3 to 4 days to play with and are not sure what to do. Maybe you have some suggestions? We're spending a week at a villa about an hour from Granada and will do a fair amount of exploring during that time. We plan to fly to Barcelona for a few days at the end of our trip, but will have 3 to 4 days between the two stops. Any advice? Thanks so much.
