Hiking with child in Chamonix?

We are planning a trip to Lyon, Annecy & Chamonix for early June 09 with our 10 year old son. We love hiking. How difficult is the alpine hiking in Chamonix?

Any suggestions for child friendly hikes in the area?

Thank you! Donna

There's a very wide range - plenty that are suitable for active 10 year olds, especially the Balcons as mentioned above. A big factor, though, is the conditions on the day - Early June can be unpredictable. This June was very rainy for the first half, and there was still a lot of snow on the high walks - they were not at all safe with a lot of neve (compacted snowdrifts) and definitely in no shape for children.

When you get there, you can drop into the Office de Haute Montagne to check conditions and they will be happy to advise you on the state of the high walks:

Also, be aware that many of the lifts don't open until mid-June, so you may be limited. The second half of the month is much better for access and the weather is likely to be better - so you may want to think about dates?

Some hikes that are generally good for kids include Chalet Floria

and Lac Blanc (often snowy in June but there are safe routes to it, ask at the OHM as above)

Donna, I have not hiked in Chamonix, but, I am sure the town will have a tourist information site, I suggest you contact that,( google for it) as when we stayed in Zermatt the tourist information office was able to provide many maps and suggestions for easy day hikes for me( and I am not athletic) , I also noted there, and I am sure it may be similar in Chamonix that most well used trails had trail head signs that list how long the hike is supposed to take.
I loved hiking in the Alps, I was never afraid to be by myself, as there are no bears or cougars to worry about like where I live!!
I am sure you will find many nice hikes for your son and you to enjoy!

I did hike in Chamonix a few years ago. I was not fit, but soldiered on. The hike I took was the "balcony" hike that Rick has written about in his book. The version I read said it was easy, but the current version points out that some bits are quite strenuous. That said, I made it. So, it depends on the fitness of you and your son. I think my Dad would have taken us on that hike back when we were young. ; ) For the hike you take the Aiguille du Midi up to see Mt. Blanc. Then on the return at Plan de l'Aiguille you get off instead of transferring to the next lift. You can hike down to a refuge (Rick says that they sell lunch. They were closed when I was there in September.) Then you turn right and hike to Montenvers. Rick says 2-3 hours. It took me longer. There is one point where Rick strongly advises going up when the trail splits. I took his advice and he's likely right, but this is where the "up" part is with quite a few switch backs. Then at the end you take the train down. It was a long day for me, but I was very, very happy that I had done it. The scenery was spectacular. The people on the trail friendly. The glacier was magnificent. I was just looking at my pictures again and marveling. Send me a PM if you would like a link to the pix.
