Hiking to Neuschwanstein

I'll be staying at Gutshof zum Schluxen in October, and I've seen many posts recommending the hike from there to Neuschwanstein. I'm a 40-something city gal with no real experience in rugged outdoor pursuits. When I hear the word "hike" I imagine a trek requiring something more than just comfy shoes (Keen Calistogas, in my case). Assuming reasonably good weather, so it's not too muddy, how difficult is the hike for those who are good urban walkers but total novice hikers? I'd be hiking by myself.

Martha,,
Did this walk this past July , the Rick Steves Family tour stays at Gutshof zum Schluxen, and we all walked to Neuschwanstein. Our youngest was an 8 yr old girl , and us parents ranged from 40-55. None of us found it required anything other then running shoes , and a rain jacket. Since you are going in October I suggest a warmer jacket..maybe.
The walk is on an old service type road( no cars on it now) , through the forest. We never saw another soul on the path till we were about 10-15 minutes from castle, so first part of hike will be rather secluded for you.
Path is never steep, but there are some gentle up hill slopes.
Absolutely any reasonalbly fit person under 90 could do this walk. Took about an hour I think,, hard to recall as with kids we spent time stopping and looking at stuff etc.
Very cool, in one spot you will pass an old border post that marks the border between Germany and Austria. We stopped and took photos.

It is a lovely hike( walk) . The walk up to the Castle is alot steeper, but paved, and takes about 20 minutes. Do take the ten minutes after you tour the castle to go to the bridge, views amazing.

That hotel is lovely, we enjoyed the food and comfy beds there very much. Enjoy.
