Hiking to Chalets in Austria and Switzerland

My family is thinking about going back to Europe for vacation. A couple years ago we saw a Rick Steves show where they mentioned hiking to chalets in the mountains. We think it sounds like a lot of fun and it's something we really want to do. Unfortunately we have no idea where the best place to go is or where to stay. If anyone knows we would love to hear ! Thanks

Grace, I can't tell you about Austria, but can about Switzerland. I highly recommend the Berner-Oberland area below Interlaken. The major mountains of the Swiss Alps, except the Matterhorn, are in that area, and the hiking possibilities are almost limitless. The scenery defines breathtaking. I suggest getting the book SWITZERLAND'S MOUNTAIN INNS: A WALKING VACATION IN A WORLD APART by Marcia and Philip Lieberman. It is available on Amazon. It will give you descriptions of most of the berghauses in Switzerland, provide photographs and trail descriptions, and make you want to go online to reserve an earliest possible flight to Switzerland. I can give you more specifics if you want to send me a private message.
