Andrea,,, suggest you go on the tripadvisor.com Zermatt forums, likely you will get more response as its specific to Zermatt, if not at least look at the Switzerland forum. I recall it takes about 15 minutes to walk through the town itself,, the streets are crowded with other tourists and hikers . It has been more then 10 years since I have been so my memories are likely not very accurate. I really think you should consider getting a hiking guide, there are Zermatt specific ones.
The times they list for hikes are fairly accurate for hikers, leisurely sunday walkers often take longer then estimated times. My dad used to say that they estimate the hike times by sending up an 80 year old local lady to walk the distances. This was his idea of humor and was meant as an insult to us non locals, I have to wonder if its true though as when we hiked up to the hut we were passed by a lady coming down alone, and I swear she was at least 70-75,, white haired .. etc, My dad stopped to chat to her and she was a local who says she does the hike every week!

Fifteen minutes to walk to the other end of town sounds about right. The hotel's website says it is an hour's walk up from Zermatt, and I assume they mean the end of Zermatt, near the lift, not the train station. Pat's suggestion of checking on Tripadvisor is a good one. There are some very knowledgeable people there on the Zermatt board.
