We will be walking in Ticino, Switzerland in early May. Are there bathroom facilities on the "suitable for all ages" trails? And can you purchase English language trail maps at the TI?
I've never hiked in the Ticino region, but in general the only restroom facilities you are likely to find will be at the occasional mountain hostel/ hotel, and at any cable-car/train stations you encounter. If you happen to pass through a village you will find restrooms as well. Trail maps are indeed available at the TI offices.
"Are there bathroom facilities on the "suitable for all ages" trails?" Yes, just go behind the trees and you'll find them. I'm not positive about Switzerland, but rarely, if there's a lot of lumberwork going on in Germany, you may see a port-o-potty.
"...Yes, just go behind the trees and you'll find them...." A lot of trails in Switzerland have no trees; they're above the tree line:) Then again there might be a boulder......
Arthritic knees - tough to use "nature" - guess I'll be Poised for adventure! Thank you all for replies.
I don't know about that area, but I have hiked the trails around Mürren. If the areas are similar, then what Michael said is right – the easier trails are across wide-open alpine meadows. You may run across a B&B or a small chalet with a restaurant...chances are there will be facilities. Otherwise, if you can't find a rock, hide behind a cow. :)
The Canton of Ticino is fairly large and there must be hiking there. Maybe up the funicular above Lugano? I remember that there is a church at altitude with a couple of houses, a car park and municipal toilets. Probably at the restaurant at the top of the funicular too. I remember an ice cream stand but not a lot else. So much of Ticino is exposed rocks and not much green. Good luck, let us know how you got on.
