Hiking In Switzerland

My sister and I are beginning to plan a trip to Switzerland, and would like to plan a hiking trip. I have not yet purchased the Rick Steves Switzerland, and will do so soon, as we plan our entire trip from the books.
Any suggestions for planned hikes that are not terribly expensive. Would love some feedback. We hike with a hiking group during the summer, and would love to experience it in Switzerland. Thanks so much.

Hi JoAnne, I'm an avid hiker and have done 4 two-week hiking trips in Switzerland, currently working on our fifth. It is a beautiful place with lots of variety in terrain and scenery, and the nice thing about hiking is that it's free (unless you ride lifts to get there and/or stop for a restaurant lunch, which we do often). Rick's book is a good guide to logistics and some areas of Switzerland, and he covers hikes in the Berner Oberland region, a bit in the Engadine, (and maybe Appenzell? I haven't seen his latest books.) But there are some other wonderful areas that he does not cover. . . . How much time do you have, and do you already know where you would like to go? . . . If budget is a major concern, I suggest you look at booking a twin room in Chalet Fontana in Mürren for your stay in the BO. This is a very reasonably-priced Bed and Breakfast run by a charming British woman. Mürren, like its neighbor Gimmelwald just down th ehill, is a good base for great hikes in this area.

Thanks, Lola,
Appreciate your feedback, and will keep in touch as we plan more. I need to buy Rick's latest book on Switzerland, and go from there, along with your suggestions.
