Hiking in German Alps.

Hi,

This is going to be my second time visiting Europe. Last Summer, I went to Switzerland and Italy. I spent a whole week hiking in Switzerland in Berner Oberland and since then I fell in love with nature and European wilderness.

This coming month, I am planning to go to Germany. So, could anyone recommend great hiking spots in Germany, preferably in Bavaria. I like spots that are completely not flat, with a little bit of climbing, great mountain views and vast valleys. I know this sounds demanding, but this is what people who are in love do all the time :P

Thanks

The area around Oberstdorf, in the Illertal of the Oberallgäu is great for hiking. In particular, you can go up into the Kleinwalsertal (part of Austria, Vor Arlberg, I think). There are lots of ski slopes in Kleinwalsertal. You can ride the lifts up if you want and hike down (harder on the thighs than you might imagine).

You can also do a lot of hiking in the area around Pfronten, including up to Falkenstein castle ruins, where Lugwig planned to build his next castle.

There are several great hikes around Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Weather and snow level permitting, you can hike all the way to the summit of the Zugspitze, although this is only recommend for experienced group hikes. Less intense but still demanding, you can hike through the Partnach gorge and ascend all the way to King Ludwig's Persian-style mountain chalet.

Thanks guys. Gamisch-Partenkirchen sounds like a great place.

Is it easy to find accomodation here?

Also, are the hikes for lone hikers? I prefer to hike alone.

"Also, are the hikes for lone hikers? I prefer to hike alone." There's plenty of hikes you could do by yourself. I just wouldn't recommend attempting the Zugspitze alone, unless you have a lot of experience and you go well equipped.
