My husband and I would like to spend about 4 days hiking in the Bavarian Alps in mid-September. Any suggestions as to some great hikes? We are in our 60's but in excellent condition. Hiked in the Berner Oberland last September and loved it.
You might consider the Oberallgäu, the area around Oberstdorf, in SW Bavaria. From Oberstdorf it is an easy trip into the Kleinwalsertal of Austria. I know Germans who spend three weeks of their annual vacations hiking in that area.
You might also try the Harz Nat. Park in northern Germany (east of Hannover and Göttingen). They have hikers packages there where you hike from town to town and they bring your luggage for you to the next town.
There are several hiking trails that begin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, including one that, depending on the previous year's snow fall, ascends all the way to the summit of the Zupspitze.
I second Lee's idea about the Oberallgäu. Here are some impressions of what a hike in this most beautiful part of Bavaria could look like: http://www.das-hoechste.de/sommer/wandern/Also visit www.oberstdorf.de
