Hiking in Bavaria, daytripping from Munich

Does anyone know a good area for a daytrip of hiking south of Munich? I will be there the last weekend in May, which I think is a holiday weekend. If weather is nice would like to hop on a train and head for the mountains, but open to renting a car instead. Area around the castles might be good, but afraid will be more crowded than usual due to holiday weekend. Garmish-Partenkirchen and Zugspitze? The Eng area? Mittenwald?

You can hike from GaP all the way to the summit of the Zupspitze... well, actually, there will probably still be snow on the summit in late May, but you can still go pretty high.

With a Bayern-Ticket you could ride to GaP and then through the Tirol to Pfronten. From Pfronten you can hike up to the Falkenstein ruins, where Ludwig was going to build his last castle.

Another great place for hiking is the Kleinwalsertal, outside of Oberstdorf.

Both these areas are a little farther from Munich, however.

I will be in Munich around the same time. Any thoughts on a good place to stay there?
