There was a segment on one of the RS episodes that told how you can stay at cabins while you travel or hike across Switzerland and Austria. Does anyone know where I can find information on that?

They are huts (Hütte) in German and Cabanes in Friench. A good guidebook for specific routes is "Walking Austria's Alps Hut to Hut". You can get it from amazon.
