We plan to hike in the Aslace region of France near Kaysersberg, Colmar and the Black Forrest in Germany. Do we need to bring hiking boots or will some good running shoes suffice?
Tammy, I suppose the answer may depend on what type of trails you'll be hiking on? I've found that my normal "street shoes" (ECCO Trac-II Low) work fine for light hiking, including in the Berner Oberland or Cinque Terrre. They don't provide a lot of ankle support, but they're fine for the trails I typically use (and my usual hiking speed). Colmar is relatively "flat" from what I remember. Baden Baden does have some hills, but they're not too high. I took a Funicular from the city up to a mountain area (MerkurBerg as I recall) and I believe there are extensive trails there but they're probably not too strenuous. Happy travels!
