When in Meersburg at Lake Constance also consider a half day trip to the Hinterlands. The town of Salem is home to the world famous boarding school to which even the incumbent Queen of Spain went is a quick stop en route to Heiligenberg (www.heiligenberg.de - German only, open thru Google Translator for English). Their castle has never been destroyed and was built and completed in the 1500s. If Neuschwanstein, which is only 100 years old, is too artificial and touristy for you consider Heiligenberg, a geniuine sleeping beauty castle...

Interesting Andreas. Wish I had known of this in 2007 when we were at Lake Constance. Just goes to show how inadequate my researching is sometimes. Hopefully we will get back there one day and will make a point to visit Heiligenberg. Thanks for the heads up.
