Herrsching to Kloster Andechs

What options are currently available to reach Kloster Andechs from the S Bahn at Herrsching. I understand there is a shuttle-bus; when does this bus operate, is the route directly between the Kloster Andechs and the S Bahn station? Are there bicycles or motor scooters to be rented near the S Bahn? I assume a bike ride, while only 3 miles or so, is mostly up-hill on the way to the Kloster, is this correct?

There are some MVV buses that are timed to meet the S-Bahn in Herrsching. If you get an MVV ticket to Andechs, the bus will be included. If you get an MVV Tageskarte, the bus will be included. The S-bahn runs ever 20 min, but the buses are, on average, every hour, so not every S-Bahn is met by an MVV bus. Check the Bahn website for schedules. Use "Kloster, Andechs". When I was there, the S-Bahn that was supposed to be met by the bus was cancelled and I had to take the following (20 min) S-Bahn, which was not met by an MVV bus, but there was a private bus for a couple of Euro. The bus stop is at the bottom of the hill. It's a steep, but short, climb up to the monastery.

I've never seen the bus that's supposed to meet the train :-( ...but a taxi always shows up, and in my experiences the rate was very inexpensive - didn't even cut into our beer budget. I'M not riding up that hill on a bicycle! Watch it on the wooded trail, especially if descending the hill - every once in a while someone falls to their death...of course, huge amounts of alcohol are involved...There are some things in this world that you have to work at...and being THAT drunk would be one of them.

... and the journey is well worth it by the reward at the end...

and try the potato salad! Not to take anything away from the beer, which is truely amazing. I would go back for the potato salad alone. Yummy!

Thanks to all. I thought the trip might involve some serious pedaling on the ascent so my wife and I will opt for the bus; but we'll miss the exhilarating trip down. By the way, you people are too good, you detected my underlying motive for visiting the Kloster--food and beverage.

The food at Andechs is great, as is the beer. I got there before it got crowded, bought a piece of pork and a pretzel at the counter, along with a beer, then sat at the table with my back to the counter. When I finish I decided to have another beer. When I turned around, the line was out the door. Lesson, get everything you are going to want the first time through.

Jon, I assumed the 'food and beverage' was for AFTER some thoughtful prayer time on your part. Why else would you go to the Kloster ;-) "Lesson, get everything you are going to want the first time through." Lee, that's an excellent lesson for life. AND for Andechs - Lee ain't kiddin' !!! The lines can get crazy long. ***In case you're using an old copy of the metro/S/U routes...Herrsching is at the end of S'8' now. It was called S'5' for a while, and until VERY recently on the Andechs own website!!! And if you keep seeing a reference to a 'Mr Ching'...well, you'll figure it out LOL!

Kloster Andechs is one of my very favorite places in the world, much less in Germany! The inn at the base of the hill leading to the monestary is a wonderful place to stay ... they also feature farm-raised venison in their butcher shop and their restaurant. If you can possibly be there between our Thanksgiving and Christmas, you'll be astounded by their Christmas fair, with the living nativity scene. So cold at night, but an unforgettable experience! I've read much mention of Andecher beers ... but don't forget the pretzel, the shaved radish and the pork knuckle (haxxen) (sp)! The people there are incredible ... I still correspond with a family I met there while sharing a table over ten years ago!!! Oh, and sharing a table is obligatory ... and the only really good way to maximize your experience!
