We will be leaving Switzerland to go to Salzburg in the middle of June. We had planned to stop one night in Zurich after the Interlaken area of Switzerland. But all hotels are already booked or too high priced because of the games. So where should we go for one night between Interlaken and Salzburg? Do you have a hotel recommendation?
The European soccer championships are the third most popular sporting event in the world, so if you want a hotel room next June you are going to have to pay top dollar. I would try other cities like Bern, Luzern, and St Gallen which are only an hour away by train; Interlaken is only 2 hours away so why not just stay an extra night there? But be advised that Switzerland AND Austria are co-hosting the tournament, and Salzburg is one of the main venues. SO you will experience the same problems with hotels in Austria as well.
Gail, how about a trip to the beautiful Lake of Constance? There is so much to do and see, it's actually worth a one-week's stay ;-) Check with http://www.bodensee-tourismus.com/. I'd recommend focusing on visiting Meersburg during the day but staying over at Friedrichshafen. From there not only the view of the Swiss alpine panorama is most stunning but also it's got the best infrastructure to get to Salzburg (by rail or road). Also check with www.euro2008.com to make sure you avoid staying in cities the night before or after there are matches - unless you care about great pan-European outdoor all-over-the-place parties, which I do.
