help with nuremburg

I am wanting to fit spending a day in Nuremberg into my March/April Germany trip. My flight gets to Frankfurt at 8 AM and I have 2 options. I will either take a train to Nuremberg from the airport and spend the day there, arriving in Rothenburg at night. Or go to Rothenburg from the airport and hit Nuremberg after Rothenburg on my way to Munich. Which would be easier/more efficient?

My full itinerary is fly into Frankfurt, Rothenburg 2 nights, Munich 4 nights, Salzburg 3 nights. Return to Frankfurt to fly home.

Definitely the 2nd option. It's only 1.35hrs from Rotheburg to Nuremberg and there is bullet train service from Nuremberg to Munich. So you could really make Nuremberg a stop for the day on your way from Rothenburg to Munich. Check with www.vgn.de and www.bahn.de

A fun suggesion I would have for your day at Nuremberg is to spend the night at Castle Veldenstein which is a short train ride from Nuremberg. The Castle is big, nice grounds and nice rooms...and is very very affordable. We had a 2 bedroom suite for 4 persons including breakfast for about 70 Euro per night. That was several years ago, but that was still cheap even back then. Our kids had a great time there.

Thanks for all the advice! Do you have any reccommendations for places to stay in Rothenburg?

Kyle, I stayed at Pension Elke, and I recommend it. You can probably walk up the day of and get a room. The wife and I were the only people staying there while we were there in December, but they don't have a ton of rooms. The breakfast is fantastic, though, and included in the room price. The family-run grocery store that is downstairs is a fantastic place to get your lunch items for the day without even leaving the building!

If you're only doing 1 night in Nuremburg then staying in the center of the city is a must. The center "walled" ring of the city is very large.

The Golden Rose in Rothenburg was fantastic - B & B inside the wall.

Jarrod,

I thought Pension Elke looked really cool, but I tried making a reservation for a night in May last month and they were already booked up.

Jill, that doesn't surprise me a lot because it was small and inexpensive. But the service is worth it. Oh, and bring a postcard from where you live. They have a board where they hang them up after guests leave.
