We are on our way north from Salzburg to Frankfurt, and would like to stay in the Munich area tomorrow night. However, we just found out there is a trade fair in Munich this week, and we are having problems finding a room anywhere. We are travelling by car and our itinerary has been fairly loose, which is why we didn't look for rooms earlier. We are looking for a place outside the city center that might still have rooms but still close enough that we could take the trains into the city. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
Normally, I would recommend the center over the suburbs anytime, as there are some conveniently-located, great hotels with free on-site parking right in the city center, such as Hotel Uhland. But, you’ll need to be “environmentally-compliant” when driving in the city. You may already be aware of the green zones now in place in many German cities…don’t drive into the posted environmental zones without the proper emissions sticker or you’ll risk a fine. If you originally rented your auto in Germany, it will have the sticker affixed, and you should be okay. If your rental is from Austria, however, you more than likely will not be in compliance. At any rate, it may not be an issue for you if you stay outside of the city. Just an interesting nugget I thought you may like to know about.
Use a hotel search engine such as munich.hotelsingermany.com or booking.com to search for hotels with rooms available for your date.
I tried the former website and found several listed with availablity for your date (22 April, right?), including Hotel Deutsches Theatre (right in center, near station) and Tessin Hotel, near Schloss Nymphenburg. You'll have to do the search yourself to find the right location for you and your car. Once you see something listed as available, I'd suggest you call them directly rather than booking on the website.
Eric, Gasthaus Bauer is southwest of the city in the town of Gauting. Here's the website: http://www.gaestehausbauer-gauting.de/ We stayed here several years ago. It's close to the autobahn and a 5 minute walk from the S-bahn into the city. If this is not available maybe there are others in this town. Good luck.
Augsburger Hof, in Landsberg, might not be the closest place. I stayed here when I wasn't trying to get into Munich, but it's less than an hour from the Hbf by train with a change in Kaufering. I stayed there the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest and they were not entirely filled and had not raised their rates.
