Help with Hornfleur, Mont St. Michel, and possibly St. Malo

We are family of 4 (2 well-traveled young children) planning a 3 night Normandie trip mid October.

1st night Hornfleur. I have a reservation at Hotel Monet and La Closerie Hornfleur. Anyone know which one is better/nicer? Both are the same price...

2nd night Mont Saint Michel. I really wanted to stay on the Mont, but most hotels are already sold out. 2 are available, but wansn't sure if worth it. La Vieille Auberge is 110 for 1 nt in a room separate from hotel -- plus the cancel policy is 30 days out which is tough when kids are involved (illness, etc). 2nd is Hotel LaDigue at 120euro's, but heard the room is not very nice so price is quite high... (we will stay only one night if we stay on the Mont)

2nd option is to stay at Hotel Vert for 2 nights which is off the Mont. at the start of causeway... Any feedback on this hotel?

I may want to visit St. Malo as well. Either stay the 3rd night there, or just drive for the day from home base near Mont...

Any information and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

The old walled part of St. Malo is very interesting -- maybe not for very young children -- but you certainly wouldn't be wasting your time to visit.

If you can't stay on the Mont I could suggest a B&B to you that is just outside of Dol-de-Bretagne, about 20 min away from Mt St Michel and St Malo. We stayed at Manoir de la Grande Mettrie a few nights with our kids and found the biggest family room ever in an ancient Norman farm house. The kids loved the atmosphere there - and we loved the price (now 74 Euro). It was a great base to do daytrips to Mt St Michel and Brittany - mostly the Eastern parts, we spent another week close to Morlaix.

Janis, why do you think the ramparts wouldn't be the right thing for young kids? Our kids were 4 and 6 years old when we explored the ramparts of St Malo. They loved it. Statues of pirates, canons etc. are quite exciting. And if the weather is nice you can take them down to the beach for a break.
