You are right there is very often "no signage". I had forgotten about that. Found our manual and figured out how to make it work-you must use the "computer voice". Ours is named "Susan". Your model is likely similar. thank you for your reply.

Not only are there no street names in Italy, there aren't street names on the tollways. Instead of taking Hwy 8 West toward San Diego, you take "this" exit to reach several random cities you've never heard of and can't find quickly on a map or "that" exit to reach another set of random cities.

We joked about knowing you want to go West and taking the exit that appears to go West, it invariably bends around and takes you the opposite direction. You then have to exit the tollway, pay your toll, drive around to an onramp, take a ticket, then start out in the right direction. You can easily lose 20 minutes for every wrong turn.

You definitely want the GPS and the TomTom 920 is probably the one to have.

As we are about to purchase the TomTom 920, this was really good information. We will use it in the US before our drive through France in a couple of months. Thanks to all of you for the insight!

thank you again to all who replied, we feel we made the right decision to get GPS at home first to be sure we have one and know how to use it before the trip.

May I ask a question -- does a GPS work better(or differently) in Germany?
