Help with Eurorail travel

My family and I will be in Germany in about 2 weeks. I have purchased the Eurorail pass and have booked several of the major rail trips we are taking. I am needing to get from Munich to Bacharach and have run into some trouble reserving the train. How worried should I be about booking that trip once I get to Munich. I am a first time european traveler and don't have a clue :) I would appreciate ANY suggestions.

According to the timetables at www.bahn.de, you will need to make a minimum of two connections to travel from Munich to Bacharach. None of the legs require reservations. Get on any train you wish.

Y'all are great! I really appreciate your time. Maybe I will sleep tonight :)

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Book when you get there. The worst that might happen is that not everyone will be seated together.

If you are not wanting a special compartment (private, sleeper, etc.) typically there is no need to make a reservation. There should always be some seats available. If you got the 1st class ticket (which I think is mandatory) you can always sit in 2nd class if 1st class is full.

Then again, you did not mention how many people are in your family, and if you all want to sit together, that may be a different issue. I am not sure if you can reserve a specific seat, unless you reserve a private compartment.

There are 5 of us and it doesn't matter if we sit together, just as long as we get where we are going.

Rick Steves says it better than I could. Look at the linke on this site for railpasses:

Have great trip. I will be riding the trains via Eurail pass in July (Germany, Austria, Italy), and other than reserving the 2 overnights, I am not planning on making reservations.

Hi Lesley,

That's a rather long trip in one day. You might want to consder breaking your journey somewhere enroute like Wurtzburg.

Reservations on trains are not required unless it is a special high speed train or a sleeper compartment is needed.

Did you know that Bacharach is only a 1 hour train ride from the Frankfurt Airport? It's a great place to begin your visit if flying into Frankfurt.
