Help!! Where should I stay in Amsterdam?

I will be visiting Amsterdam in early April for roughly a week on a business trip. The conference will be held at Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ and the Moevenpick Hotel. I would like to stay within walking distance and for less than $1500 USD - and safely! Any suggestions?

Within walking distance of the Moevenpick - that's where part of the conference will be held.

There aren't any other hotels within walking distance. The closest would be the Ibis at Centraal Station; which is about a 30 minute walk. This area of Amsterdam is being redeveloped (formerly a cargo ship terminal)and there is a lot of construction. But the Movenpick hotel is within walking distance of the brand new city library, the science museum, and the Stedelijk Museum CS (modern art). Tram 16 which stops at the Movenpick, runs right through the middle of the city center, so its easy to reach via tram from most anywhere.

Walking distance of where? 1500 USD for a weeks stay works out to about $215 a night USD; that is more or less what the Movenpick Hotel charges per night. The Movenpick is a little out of the way, near the cruise ship terminal, but there is a tram stop right next to the hotel.

Hi Heather

we were just there in October and we stayed in Haarlem (a rick steves suggestion) it is cheaper and only a 17 minute train ride to amsterdam and other points of interest. We stayed at a B&b and it was a really good deal almost 1/2 of what it was going to cost us to stay in Amsterdam. We really enjoyed it, ricks books gives good suggestions as does the Haarlem website was a lovely town to stay in as well, has much to see.
