Hi, I am looking for suggestions for a second week after spending the first week in the Barcelona area. I am traveling with my husband and 2 sons who will be 16 and 12 when we travel next July. I am leaning towards southern France/Italian Riveria but am open to suggestions. We went to Rome, Florence and Venice last summer and also London and Paris- 3 yrs ago.
Any suggestions appreciated!
Take the train to Coulliere and rent a car and go to Carcasonne for the place where Robin Hood with Kevin Costner was filmed, on to Albi with a huge gothic brick catherdral, built to humble the Cathers,on to the dordogne river for canoeing the rapids, on to the Pont du Gare and Les bauex(?) for the ruins, ending in Nimes and(here I'm a little shaky) for either the Circus or theater.
Why? the guys will be able to gallop over the ruins and see spectacular sites and you will be able to bask in the glow of listening to all your guys talk up the trip.
I think that Gerry has very much got the right idea, but I would say, spend a night in pretty Collioure and then pick up the car in nearby Perpignan (also by rail). Just a small logistical detail, since I don't think you can rent a car in Collioure. Fly home from Toulouse (fabulous city) or Bordeaux (less so) or Paris.
With two young boys I would head directly to The Dordogne which is relatively close. Cave paintings, ruins, nature, castles....just a magical place and very family oriented.
