Help! Train from Munich to Rothenburg!

I can't seem to find a train from Munich to Rothenburg that leaves after 8:00pm (and gets in before 11:00). We will be taking Mike's Bike Tour to Neuschwanstein castle, but we don't get back until 7:45pm. I don't want to arrive at our hotel Golden Rose too late, I don't think they have 24-hour reception. Any suggestions? Should I look under different train stations (not the main ones?) Thanks!

Jenny,

I had a brief look at the schedules, and wasn't able to find anything that would fit the times you provided. There's a train leaving at 17:56 but the next departure isn't until 22:52 (arriving at 05:39!). Based on that, I suspect something will have to be changed.

One possibility might be to take an earlier tour? Radius have tours leaving at 09:30 & 10:30 (depending on time of year), but again these take about nine hours plus travel time, so they don't get back to Munich until early evening.

Your best option might be to arrange a car rental, picking up in Munich and dropping in Rothenburg? I haven't checked Buses, but doubt there will be many trips at that time of night.

Good luck!

Jenny, this really seems like something you should have planned before committing to the bike tour.

But, OK, your best bet here is probably to forget going back to Munich and go directly from Füssen to Rothenburg. The last connection from Füssen to RodT leaves Füssen at 16:05 and gets to Rothenburg at 20:49 (8:49 PM). The trip is all by regional trains so the two of you can make the entire trip with a €27 Bayern-Ticket.

Either:
1. Cancel the tour and go to Füssen on your own (it can be done).
2. Tell "Mike" to get you to the Füssen Bhf by 4 PM so you can take the train to Rothernburg. Alternatively, there is a bus leaving the castles (Hohenschwangau) at 3:46 PM, which connects you to the Bahnhof and the 4:05 PM train.

Lee,

Good point! I never thought to check the connections from Fussen to Rothenberg.

Thanks everyone. I didn't realize there would be such a gap between train times, I should have checked first. I have decided to spend the night in Munich, it won't be as rushed anyway. I'll take the train to rothenburg in the morning.
