This is a time share also. I think what I am going to do is go to salzburg,Munich and vienna and go one place every other day leaving open time to discover small town of st johann and any thing really close in the area. my only question is should i travel train or car? there is suppose to be a connection in st johann which is walking distance from hotel. and how far is vienna from salzburg? thanks so much for your reply

Is it St. Johann in Tirol or St. Johann im Pongau? Both are about that far from Salzburg. If it's St. Johann im Pongau, I've stayed just a couple miles down the road in the town of St. Veit im Pongau. We went skiing on the Dachstein Glacier, just east of there during the day, so you could easily make it a day trip. If you're going in the winter it's a great ride up and a decent ski area. If you're going in the summer you can still go up and look around, it's a nail biter of a gondola ride. The bahn brings you up to 2700m, and the mtn is 3000m, really spectacular. Here's the link to the mtn website:

MICHAEL> I THINK DRIVING A CAR WOULD BE FUN AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT DRIVE LIKE THEY DO IN ROME I WAS PUSHED RIGHT OFF THE ROAD AND HAD TO VEER OFF DOWN THE WRONG ROAD AND IT TOOK ME 3 HOURS TO GET BACK TO MY MOTEL! THE FURTHER I GOT AWAY FROM THE CITY THE LESS ENGLISH ANYONE SPOKE, MY DAUGHTER WAS READY TO PACK US UP AND COME HOME. IF I DRIVE I WOULD LOVE TO CROSS THE BORDER INTO GERMANY . WILL THEY STOP YOU AT THE BORDER? AND WHAT IS THIS TOWN MAUTHAUSEN?

KATHY I WILL BE STAYING IN ST. JOHANN IN PONGAU. IT WILL BE THE FIRST WEEK IN MAY. WILL IT BE CHILLY?
THANKS FOR THE DACHSTEIN GLACIER TIP. SOUNDS A LITTLE TOO HIGH FOR ME BUT MY DAUGHTER WILL PROBABLY LIKE THAT. I THINK I WILL JUST FIND A PUB AND CHILL OUT THERE. SPEAKING OF PUBS, DO YOU KNOW A LIGHT CLEAR BEER THATS GOOD IN THIS AREA. I DON'T LIKE DARK BEER TOOO STRONG. AND WHAT IS GAS COSTING IN GERMANY/AUSTRIA? I REALLY THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT.

Any beer called 'helles'...and pretty much any place serving beer with have at least one offering of a 'helles'. And remind your daughter that you ARE in a German-speaking country; just take a deep breath the next time things get a bit 'hairy' ;-) This, too, shall pass...have another helles...

Denise, Mauthausen is a concentration camp. It is a very sobering place to visit. It contains authentic buildings, gas chambers, crematoria, and many memorials to those who died there. There is also a museum. It is well worth your time. And no, they won't stop you at the border to Germany.

For the gas question, I just paid 1.51 Euro a liter today. That's roughly $8.70 a gallon (at today's 1E = $.695 rate).
