After 3 weeks of travel in Italy and Switzerland next June, my husband and I will be leaving Murren on Monday and have a 10:10 AM flight back home on Tuesday from Geneva. We will have one final day (Monday) left on our 8 day Swiss Pass. Our thoughts (and questions) are as follows: -Travel the Scenic Golden Pass route from Interlaken to Montreux -Boat from Montreux to Chateau de Chillon... Are boat docks near the train station? Is there luggage storage somehwhere? -Travel by train on to Geneva where we need lodging for our final night.
Any convenient hotel recommendations? (keeping in mind we are probably broke by this time) Any other suggestions and/or details to build on this plan would be appreciated! Note: We are in our 60's so may be running out of steam by this time, so be gentle on us!
Judy, your plan looks doable, and you'll certainly get maximum use of a day on the pass. Mürren to Montreux is a bit over 4 hours by the Golden Pass route. t is indeed a scenic journey. I believe there are lockers in the Montreux station, but I hope someone else knows for sure. You can also find the station facilities on the SBB website. The station is a downhill walk to the lakefront. I'm not sure about the boat stops; we walked to the Chateau. It is alovely castle, well worth a visit. You might look at staying in the smaller lakefront town of Morges instead of Geneva. It is a 30 to 40 minute ride to the airport form there, on a direct train (no changes). A 7:30 train would get you to the airport in good time for your 10:10 flight. We stayed at a nice lakefront hotel there and enjoyed the lakefront promenade on our last night in Switzerland. There are smaller budget options in Morges as well. If you haven't heard of the town . . Audrey Hepburn lived there for 30 years or so. If the idea of staying 35 minutes away from the airport feels stressful, then I'm sure someone can suggest a decent hotel closer to the airport. that was our one and only time flying out of Geneve (we usually go through Zurich) so I can't help there.
Hi Judy Good info from Lola. The train station near the Chateau de Chillon is just a shelter at a wide place in the track. It is below the road, which is above the entrance to the attraction. My memory is that there is a little walk from the station, mostly level, a bit narrow in spots. Haven't done the boat so can't speak to it, but it has to be lower than the station. Hope that helps. Do you have only a few bags? If so, the Swiss railways can help..... from the SBB website, their words not mine: ...... Your luggage travels fast with the train. Want to travel through Switzerland with ease? Without having to lug your bags around? Our "Fast luggage" service makes it possible. With "Fast luggage", hand in your luggage before 9 a.m. and collect it at your destination on the same day any time after 6 p.m., somewhat later at certain locations. The prices. Individual passengers pay 20 francs per luggage item. Travel groups of 10 or more and families with a Junior Card or the STS Family Card pay 15 francs per luggage item. The following luggage items travel faster. Suitcases Bags Skis Snowboards Sleds Baby carriages, prams, strollers, pushchairs
Each item of luggage may weigh up to a maximum of 25 kilograms. Unfortunately, we are unable to transport bicycles as "Fast luggage". By the way: For groups of 10 or more, we can individually clarify whether "Fast luggage" might be an option for other destinations as well. Please check the opening hours at the place of departure and destination. ==== Nigel again: Murren, Interlaken Ost, Interlaken West, and Geneva all participate. .... more to come ....
... more ... So book in your bags before 0900 in Murren, play all day and pick up your bags that evening at Geneva station. Its only one stop on a frequent service to the airport. There are lots of hotels walking distance from Geneve station, a couple at the airport. We stayed at a Suitehotel (now often called Novotel Suite) a short electric bus from the airport and used the supermarket and restaurants, etc. at the airport frequently. The airport train station is directly underneath the airport, the bus stops are all at one end of the station.
