My wife and I have never been to Spain and are going to Visit our son in school in Sevilla. We arrive in Madrid, what should we do and see in a week without a hectic travel schedule?
Take a look at the Rick Steves Spain book. He doesn't cover many areas of Spain, but that's one he talks a lot about.
Depends on how much time you want to spend with your son in Sevilla. take the fast AVE train from Madrid to Sevilla, then rent a car there and you will have far more mobility (we use carjet.co.uk). Sevilla itself is probably worth two full days. I would spend another day and a half in Granada (about 3 hours on excellent roads) to see the Alhambra, but book tickets in advance (at www.alhambra-tickets.es) since it's the most popular tourist attraction in Spain. I would also day trip to Ronda and Arcos de la Frontera from Sevilla (and any of the villages in that area) for a good sampling of the "white villages" of Andalucia. It would be a bit of a stretch, but you could also day trip to Gibraltar (about 2 1/2 hrs by car). If you do decide on The Rock, PM me and I'll send you coordinates for a parking garage that's close to the frontier. I find Madrid to be a fascinating city. But since you'll want to be close to your son, save it for another trip....because you will be back!
