Do you have any dinner recommendations for a family of four traveling on a budget? What about the restaurants that RS recommends?
In July 2007 I had an excellent meal at Saran Essbar. It was a RS recommended restaurant.
Thanks Perry & Lynn, I appreciate the suggestions!
Any others? Ken
I second the recommendation of Saran Essbar. It was excellent food and the owner was very friendly
Hi Ken,
I spent Christmas 2006 in Salzburg with my fiance. We ate at a hotel near our hotel, the Steirische Weinstube. It is at St.-Julien-Strasse 9 just outside the Altstadt. Everything on the menu is excellently prepared, and we enjoyed the traditional dinner of goose with red cabbage on Christmas Eve. It is a small, family-owned restaurant with lots of atmosphere and hospitality. A great place to enjoy a hearty meal on a cold night. Unfortunately, they don't have a website, but this place is well worth a try. We stopped in every night of our trip for a late snack at the end of the night. Enjoy your trip. Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Rob
Sorry, I meant a restaurant near our hotel. The weinstube is not in a hotel.
Robert, thanks for the recommendation and is it a reasonably priced restaurant for a family on a budget?
Has anyone dined at the Stiftskeller St. Peter located in Old Town?
If so, did you attend the candlelight Mozart Dinner concert in the abbey's baroque hall for Eur 45/person?
According to Frommer's, this is the old restaurant in Europe dating back to 803 A.D.
St.Peter's Stiftskeller is a fun and excellent place to eat as a family, even if a bit touristy. I can't speak to the prices, that depends on the occasion, and I have eaten there in many years.
Ken, when you get to Salzburg, look at all the posters around town advertising special occasions dinners at various eateries. Leave yourself open!
As a rule of thumb, it is relatively inexpensive to dine at country style inns throughout Europe, avoid places that are called RESTAURANTS, that will be more pricey.
Look for a Gasthaus(does not mean guest-house in German, but inn!!) type places, especially where the locals eat.
Salzburg also has a quite a bit to offer in the direction of more exotic foods, you can find great deals there as well. Better yet, ask the proprietors of where you a staying for an insider tip, and keep in mind that almost ALL eateries, no matter the price range, have their menus posted outside the premises. I love to scout out the places I want to eat at during my walks through town, no matter where in Europe. That's part of the fun :-))
Also, pick up a local newspaper, in the back there will be a section with special deals, offers and events from local places, a great resource, even if you can't read a word of German!
I recommend the Salzburg webpage in general:
http://www2.salzburg.info/
they do a really nice job! With a few clicks you can get right beyond the 'luxury' deals and offers, which of course dominate the front page.
You will love Salzburg, it is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the universe! Happy travels!
