Help needed with potential itinerary - Provence / Switzerland

Hi everyone
I am busy planning an itinerary for our European holiday, and we are thinking that we may hire a car in Lyon and drive from there into Switzerland, visiting Zermatt and Interlaken, and then meandering back into France and exploring the area around Provence, and finishing in Nice... then we'll get the train into Italy (but that is another forum post :-)) I have many questions but I will try and be specific - How long would be a reasonable amount of time for this part of our trip? Could it be done in around 10 days? Is this a rerasonable itinerary? Any suggestions for specific places to visit in this area? We are into small, pretty places, history, nice food, scenery, good photo opportunities.
Any help needed, I think we need quite a bit!
Cheers

Cathy

Hi Cathy,

I haven't done the exact trip that you're proposing so I'm not sure about travel times between each city for driving. I think that Kent's post about itinerary planning would be helpful for you so that you can map out your trip.

Driving Trip Planning and More

You will probably want to stay at least 2-3 nights in each location so you will need to factor that into your plan.

Best wishes!

Hi again everyone... an update... I have looked through maps and a thinking this could be a possible route for us to get from Lyon to Zermatt... drive time is supposed to be around 4 hours, but we thought we might take a couple of days.
Leave Lyon, and head to Zermatt, driving through... Geneva / Lausanne, and then onto Martigny, Sion and Sierre, finishing in Zermatt where we will stay for a couple of days. We will then head to Interlaken and base ourselves there for a few days and do some side trips to Lucerne, Grindelwald and of course the Jungfrau railway.
Any thoughts?

Cathy, rather than base yourself in Interlaken, I suggest going to Lauterbrunnen, Murren, or Wengen where you'll be right in the mountains. If you stay in Interlaken, you'll find it's mostly a tourist trap and that you can't actually see the spectacular mountain scenery from there. And the primary reason to be in that area of Switzerland is to see and be immersed in the mountain scenery. It is far different from Zermatt where there is essentially only one mountain--the Matterhorn. In the Berner-Oberland below Interlaken, there are the most dominant mountains of the Swiss Alps. But you have to get out of Interlaken to see them. If you stay in Interlaken, you'll have to take the train into the mountains each day, and that will take travel time that could be used to enjoy the mountains. You'll want at least two days, and most likely three at a bare minimum, in the mountains. That's because there's so much to see and do and because you may hit a day when the mountains are socked-in by the clouds. Now, if restaurants and souvenir shops are all you want, and not the mountains, then Interlaken is good for that. Often over-priced, but good. The merchants will be delighted to help you lighten your wallet.
