Help me plan our mother/daughter Spain trip!

Unfortunately we don't have enough days to visit all the places we want to go! We are definitely going to Madrid, Granada & Seville. Our plane tickets are RT Madrid, and we will use the AVE to go south.

I anticipate that we will have 4 additional days on our trip aside from time spent in those bigger cities. I have tentatively scheduled them as follows:

An afternoon spent driving from Seville to Arcos for the evening, then the next day driving from Arcos to Nerja via a lunch stop in Ronda (hopefully avoiding the worst parts of the Costa del Sol!).

A whole afternoon spent driving from Granada to Cordoba, then the next day in Cordoba before taking the AVE back to Madrid in the late afternoon.

Another full day based in Madrid in which we might do a day trip to Toledo on the AVE.

Can you steer me away from anything in this schedule that looks disastrous, or recommend alterations to my plan that worked better for you? Would you leave out any of these places to spend more time in the larger cities? I've currently got 2 1/2 days in Madrid, 2 days in Seville and 1 1/2 in Granada.

I know this seems like a lot of driving and not much time in the big cities. But...I am traveling with my mom who has mobility impairments but loves museums and a sister whose idea of a great vacation is parking herself in a tiny village for 10 days to absorb small-town atmosphere, rather than seeing any "sights". So we figured that my sister needs some small-town time and my mom would not be able to hop on and off trains and buses too much so a car for a few days would be easier.

We are definitely not planning any more than two things in a day (for example - a museum in the morning then an evening show) and the rest of the time is relaxation and soaking up the atmosphere. If we only hit the highlights so be it - at least we will have some good mom/daughter time, which was the entire purpose of the trip. I would appreciate any advice you could give me!

Shannon, we took a day trip from Madrid to Segovia by bus, but now I hear there is a train service.

We really like the quaintness of Segovia, not to mention the aquaduct.

Also in Madrid we took in a show, Victor Victoria. My husband was so thrilled because a famous spanish actress/singer was playing V.V. I found it very different since the entire musical was in spanish! LOL.

If you haven't booked hotels, and since you have a car.. have you considered staying in a parador? That's one thing I wished we did, but the locations were too remote for us.

Whatever you do, you will have a great time. Spain is such a wonderful place!

Shannon...that sounds like a pretty good itinerary. Be prepared for some windey roads through the mountains from Arcos thru Ronda to Nerja....plan on an average speed of 40 mph, even less if you're not a confident driver. You'll come across some wonderful scenery and towns along that run, but it will be quite tiring for the driver (maybe you can drop off your sister along the way, and pick her up on the way back :)). Driving elsewhere will be fine...Spain has quite a good system of "interstate" highways these days. To avoid disappointment, try to book your Toledo AVE tickets as soon as you arrive in Madrid. Be aware that Toledo has some areas where the slopes on the streets may be an issue for your mom. If she brings a walker, make sure the brakes are on tight!

I highly recommend the parador in Granada. They will also book you a tour of the Alhambra. Depending on the time of year it can be very hard to get into due to the crowds, so you must get tickets in advance over the internet or through the parador. The parador is up on the mountain right next to the Alhambra. I've been to Madrid, Sevilla, Cordoba, Ronda and Granada, and recommend them all. Make sure you see the Alcazar in Sevilla. The parador in Ronda is also dramatic, overlooking the river cliff. Great trip!

Shannon - We did a similar itinerary last October, but ended up changing it a little to save time by not doing any back tracking. We started in Granada and rented a car on our way out of town to go to Ronda, Arcos and Seville. In Seville, it was easy to drop the car at the airport and take the bus into the center of town. From Seville we took the AVE to Cordoba and then on to Madrid.

We flew to Granada to save time... Our flight was from Barcelona but I think Vueling has flights from Madrid as well. Not sure if flying saves any time from Madrid like it did from Barcelona.

As for the timing, we had about the same amount of time in Granada and Seville but a couple more days in Madrid because we did a few day trips. Just buy your tickets for the AVE train online or at a travel agent. We needed to be flexible and tried to buy them the same day station in Madrid for Toledo. We ended up wasting so much time as we had to wait almost 2 hours and the early trains sold out.

I agree on the Alhambra - that is not to be missed. We stayed at the Room Mate Migueletes hotel in Granada and highly recommend it (not in Rick's book) - a charming place that has been meticulously restored and it has an elevator. We really enjoyed staying overnight in Ronda at the Parador - it was amazing. From Madrid, we went to Toledo and Segovia as day trips, and I would love to go back to either one. In Madrid, one of the most enjoyable things was the Hop On Hop Off tour bus for the entire loop of both routes.

If you have any other questions, just PM me.

Have fun!

Our favorite place in Spain was Granada. We were there for 2 days (51 hours, actually).

This gave us enough time to visit the Alhambra twice--the first time at night, which was magical--and explore the Albacin and other sights.
