Help me figure out which to do first (Paris/Normandy)

It's getting closer to time to go on vacation and I can't make up my mind which to do first, Paris or Normandy. We are flying into Frankfurt Germany and seeing some of Germany first (about a week), then heading to France. I was planning on taking our rental car into France and driving to the D-day beaches and Mont St. Michel, spending 2-3 days in that area and then heading to Paris, dropping the car off in Paris. (which I know is expensive) Spend 3 days in Paris and then taking the train to Frankfurt.

One of the people going with us will be leaving after just 2 1/2 weeks so she will be heading to the airport about this time and the rest of us are going to rent another car and spending the last week and a half in Germany.

Does this sound like the best plan? We already have our plane tickets and have specific things to do in Germany first, so I won't be going to France first. But, should we drop the car off in Frankfurt and take the train to Paris, spend the three days there. Then, rent a car in Paris, drive to Normandy and take the car back to Paris, and take the train again back to Frankfurt? I think in the end it will cost about the same for me either way, since I'll have to pay for three out of the five train tickets.

Any thoughts? Also has anyone ever stayed in the Hotel St-Louis Marais in Paris? I was reading some reviews and they were pretty mixed, although, most were good. No elevator but we are only taking one backpack each. Don't plan to spend a lot of time in the hotel so we don't need anything fancy.

Either of your alternatives will work.To avoid two car rentals, it's about 7 - 8 hours of straight driving time from the Frankfurt area to Caen (just south of the D-Day Beaches), that's driving time only, add for pit stops. You could break up the drive by stopping overnight at Reims, even tour the Champagne region, why not have some fun on the drive? Then drive to Paris and turn the car in on your first day in Paris. This involves some back-tracking back to Paris from Normandy, but avoids two car rentalsThe alternative travel plan given in your post will also work.
