I'm working on a "whirlwind" first trip to Europe and am having trouble arranging the Salzburg/Bavaria portion of the trip. We are a retired couple used to driving long distances when we travel6-10 hrs, sightseeing along the way, eat, sleep, do it again. This trip will be mostly by train, so we think that the train journeys will be more relaxing than our typical drives. We'll see! At this point, we plan to travel from Venice, and we'll have Oct. 6 as a travel day, then we'll have the 7th, 8th, and 9th and part of the 10th to sightsee, but we want to end up in Rothenburg to stay the night of the 10th. We want to include Salzburg, Dachau, and Neuschwanstein and whatever else we can see along the way. In Salzburg, we found a 4 hour day trip that will take us to several locations, then we'd like to attend a concert that evening. I know we could stay in Munich and do day trips, but we'd rather stay elsewhere.
That's a lot of train riding in such a short time, but here's what you might do that would include the places mentioned (except Dachau): 10/6 Venice to Salzburg (6½ hrs by train, change at Villach) 10/7 Salzburg, 2nd night 10/8 Salzburg to Füssen (4 hrs by train, change at Munich)
10/9 Füssen, 2nd night (Neuschwanstein day) 10/10 Füssen to Rothenburg o.t. (5 hrs by train, 2 changes) If you want to have time to see both Neuschwanstein and Dachau then staying in Munich would work better.
Thank you very much. I thought it seemed logical to go from Venice to Salzburg first.
