Hello we were planning to stay our last 2 nights in Germany in Rothenburg then drive to Frankfurt airport, now we are thinking may be better to stay in Heidelberg for 1 night and visit Rothenburg (and other places) on the way to Wurzburg and spend our final night in Wurzburg then drive to the airport next day. Although we don't like 1 night stays, this seems to make sense. Any tips for Heidelberg or Wurzburg?
for hotels, restaurants, 'must see' stuff?
I don't know the rest of your itinerary, but it seems excessive to base for a night in Heidelberg and then take off the next day for Rothenburg. Within 40 minutes drive from Heidelberg, you can find other towns that offer pretty much the same experience... except they don't have nearly as many trinket shops. Some attractive towns nearby include Heppenheim, Neckargemunde, Neckarsteinach, Dilsberg, Weinheim, Michelstadt, Erbach, Hirschhorn, Bad Wimpfen, etc. The most interesting site in Heidelberg, in my opinion, is the Thingstätte near the top of the Heiligenberg mountain. This was an outdoor propaganda amphitheater built during the Nazi era. Other than the removal of the swastikas and other National Socialist symbols, it remains completely intact. And just above this lies the ruins of Kloster St. Michel. These are a little hard to find, even with a car. Nearby Schwetzingen has a large baroque Schloss and garden complex. If you like castles, don't overlook the Neckar valley between Heidelberg and Heilbronn.
I agree. There is so much to see in Heidelberg and the general area, much of it similar to what you would see in Wurzburg or Rothenburg. Do try to take a cruise on the river there, past the vineyards. What sort of experiences do you like? Everyone's must see is different.
I do recommend Schnitzelbank for dinner in Heidelberg - big portions, local wine, friendly and off the main tourist street.
appreciate all replies, I see it may be better to stay in Heidelberg for 2 nights - go into the Neckar valley for a day and just drive from Heidelberg into frankfurt airport on departure day.
Do visit Bad Wimpfen on the Neckar River. It was one of our favorite stops on a trip a few yrs ago. I may be in the minority, but wasn't a big fan of Heidelberg. The castle was neat but other than that, not so much.
