Heidelberg In A Hurry

Thinking of spending the night of 2 June in Heidelberg while on the way to Frankfurt from Munich. Have to fly out of Frankfurt at 09:45 3 June. Where might be a good place to stay? What would you do in Heidelberg if you only one afternoon and evening?

Heidelberg is compact enough that you can get a decent overview in a few hours. Other than visiting the Schloss on the mountain, there isn't that much in the way of "sites" to visit. Rather, it's just a nice place to wander around.

Heidelberg is also home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. The Schlos is great. I remember to crossing the Neckar on the old bridge. I recall some story about dueling and Heidelberg, but I can't find and references to that so maybe it was a student story. It was the first city I visited when I was a student in Germany. Pam

Other than the fabulous Schloss, I found Heidelberg quite disappointing as the main street of the old city seemed so Americanised with Pizza Hut, KFC, Woolworths etc. There wasnt much else to see and we were glad we only stayed for one day.

There are hotels very near or at the airport, but in my opinion they are too expensive. I'm sure Jo, who posts on this website can suggest places in Frankfurt, but from my experience, the best place to stay before a flight out is one of the three hotels (Schottenhof, Königshof, or Hammer) right across the Bahnhofsplatz from the Mainz Hbf. From there it is a direct S-Bahn to the airport. My preference is Hotel Königshof (www.hotel-koenigshof-mainz.de).

Thanks Lee. The hotels you recommended do seem quite nice. If we do hit Heidelberg it will probably not be for the night.
