That's really the question there. Is the Austria Saver Pass--two of us traveling together--valid for a run from Innsbruck, Austria to Munich, Germany? Danke.
National rail passes are valid for travel in that country, and occasionally to border stations just outside of that country. Munich IS NOT a border station for an Austrian Rail Pass.
A few "corridor" trains go from Innsbruck, with a last stop in Kufstein, Austria, through Germany (Rosenheim) without stopping, to Salzburg, and an Austrian rail pass is valid for them, but you can't get off in Germany.
If you don't mind spending about 20 minutes longer on the train, you can do the route from Kufstein, Austria, to Munich with regional trains and a Bayern-Ticket.
I doubt that you can get the Bayern-Ticket in Innsbruck, but I have seen them sold in Austrian automats well into Austria. You can get it from the Bahn Shop, but the ordering pages are in German. Or, you can get off in Kufstein and buy it from an automat there.
A faster and more scenic way from Innsbruck to Munich is via Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Again, if you get your Bayern-Ticket from the Bahn Shop, you could just use it from the German/Austrian border between Scharnitz and Mittenwald to Munich. If nothing else, check to see if it is sold at the Austrian Rail automats in Innsbruck. Or, lastly, get an Austrian Rail Anschluß Ticket to Mittenwald, or a ticket from Scharnitz to Mittenwald for about €6 pP, in Innsbruck, get off in Mittenwald (worth a few hours, anyway) and buy a Bayern-Ticket there.
Thanks! But I'm still confused. Our train to Munich is a 1 hr 37 min fast train, with no changes. When we get to the German boarder, can I buy tickets on the train for the rest of the journey?
