Haut-de-Cagnes or Cagnes -sur-Mer

My wife and I will be in Provence for 10 days mid-September.
We read a description of Haut-de-Cagnes and like the sound of it. But, it seems to also be Cagnes-sur-Mer, or geographically close. sur-Mur is described as a "tourist trap". Does anyone know if the two are separate towns/villages or do they merge geographically like small towns around Los Angeles, or are they one in the same with different designations? Thanks. Ross

They merge eventually. The medieval town is perched on a hill a couple of kilometers from the beach area. To get the exact distance you can consult viamichelin.com. All the towns along that part of the coast merge eventually, like L.A.

Two different places. I wouldn't describe Cagnes-sur-Mer (literally, "on Sea") as a tourist trap (where did you see that?) in the traditional way - more a working town which pulls tourists to the most excellent Renoir Museum in his final residence. A most magnificent homage, to my mind. To see a painting and its setting is so moving. Haut-de-Cagnes ("Height of") is across a valley and up a bunch. Very narrow winding streets and very posh. You're not in Provence there, BTW, that's the French Riviera, the Cote d'Azur. That whole area up towards Grasse and further inland is super cool. I even once had Socca better than that in Nice. Hope you're driving. Its a haul up to Cagnes-sur-Mer from the station, and an Ironman job to Haut-de-Cagnes.

Thanks for the information. Fodor described sur-Mur as a
"tourist trap". So much for Fodor. The Helpline is a blessing and again, thanks for the informtion. Ross Carter
