Has anyone ever stayed here?? bacharach

Has anyone ever stayed in the hostel there? It is called the Junendherberge Stahleck. It is a castle that was made into a hostel. I have seen it on Rick's Germany series and read it in the book. My boyfriend and I are thinking of going there on our next trip to Germany. How easy it Bacharach to get to from Munich? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks-Kim

It's a long trip from Munich to the middle Rhein. I certainly wouldn't do it just to see Bacharach. Stay in Bavaria and see everything you can there, then come back to Germany again and do the Rhein and Mosel.

I would not stay in a hostel. For a little more you can stay in town. I didn't spend the night in Bacharach, but I was particularly impressed with Im Malerwinkel (wwwl.im-malerwinkel.de).

I stayed in this hostel although it was about 15 years ago. I don't remember much about the hostel itself which probably means it was an average hostel; I was in a dorm room (probably about 6 beds). I am sure things have changed. I do remember that it was a bit of a walk up the hill from the main part of the town to the hostel. Back then, I had a great time there. In hostels you meet people from all over the world. I recall going out to dinner in Bacharach with a number of other travellers and then I spent the entire next day taking the boat up the Rhine with some Australians whom I met there. While hostels are not necessarily the most luxurious accommodations, I can say that I always met really interesting people when I stayed in them.

It's not hard to get there by train or car. We stayed there with our family of five. It's a very nice hostel. It's not a party hostel. It's dorm style with one bathroom per room. Ours had ten beds but they only put our family of five in it. We had a great view and reasonably good food is available there, although I would probably seek better eating options.

I've found you will want reservations. The first time through the area (late September), I wanted to stay but it was full. On the next trip through, it was one of the few reservations I made and I needed them. It was full in mid October.

The area between Bacharach and St. Goar is beautiful and worth seeing. Take a short cruise between the two towns. You will go past the Lorelei statue and lots of castles. Upstream will take longer than downstream depending on whether you are in a hurry or want a longer trip.

Also check out Salzburg. Stay at Institute San Sebastian for similar lodging. Very clean and quiet.

It is a beautiful hostel with incredible views, I was there in August 2007. the rhine is lovely but along way from Munich if you are using public transit. A car is avisable or arrive in Frankfurt as an option. In any event the rhine in general warrants about 3 days visit.

The trip from Munich to Bacharach by car, according to ViaMichelin, takes over 4 hours one way, under optimal conditions. By train is 5 hours, but you know it won't take any longer.

Hi Kim,

I stayed in Bacharach last May. The town was cute (not much there though) and we loved the Rhine River tour but I'm not sure I would go all the way across Germany just to go there. We stopped for a night on our way to Amsterdam and were happy we did but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Munich is awesome, you'll have a great time! Rothenburg is probably closer if you're looking for an interesting little town and it's fun to walk around! You go past the wall on the way into the city center and you've gone back hundreds of years. Good luck!
