We have an extra day in our itinerary and would like to know the best way to get to Lichtenstein. We can either leave from Salzburg or the Bavarian area (specifically Fussen or Garmisch). Do we need a car or is the train a good option?
We were there 9 or so years ago. I don't know if trains are an option. We had driven with friends - started in Zurich which was convienent. You should check out www.bahn.de to see if trains are a possibility.
Hi Sue,
We stayed one night in Liechtenstein (Triesenberg) a while ago. Personally, I wouldn't bother. Pretty long way to go for....There is nothing different about being there than in the Bavarian Alps, Austrian Alps, etc.

Lichtenstein is largely in existence because it is a haven for tax cheats. It has more "companies" than people, if you know what I mean...
Went out of our way several years ago to go there. By the time we got there, everything was closed up for the day (all the tourist shops) and there was nothing else to see. I wouldn't waste my time or gas. Have fun on your adventures!
Was there in May 2007. We left Bregenz, Austria on our way to Aosta, Italy so it was not really out of the way for us to go to Vaduz. It was nice and we stayed about 3 hours and walked the trail above town to the castle. We got our passports stamped at the tourist information center and sent a postcard home from there. If you have a car and happen to be driving close to the country then stop, get your passport stamped and you could mark it off your list as another country visited but I would not go out of the way to go there.
Back in the day, Lichtenstein, Luxemburg and Andorra where just added stamps in your passport (we treated each additional country as a trophy). Today, there is little reason to go out of your way for any of the three (that is not to denigrate any of them, as they are all lovely in their own right).
Apart from the duke's castle, there is little to distinguish Liechtenstein from its surroundings. Coming back from my friends' place in Sargans last time, we drove through a residential area and with nary a notice had gone from Switzerland to Liechtenstein. If that's a thrill for you, by all means head there - you will be passing through beautiful Austrian countryside, especially if you take the Autobahn through the Inn valley.

Hi Sue,
... we've never arrived in Liechtenstein except by train... however, you could check out the other possibilities at ViaMichelin (link above). Just fill in your 'continent', country, origin and destination. You will note you may search for information befitting many modes of travel, including afoot. bon voyage! P
There is nothing to do or see in Liechtenstein. I'd rather spend the extra day at the Lake of Constance, especially in Lindau. Also there is a replica of the passenger cabin of the Hindenburg Zeppelin in Friedrichshafen, where all those huge air ships were built. Also the view of the Swiss alps is most mgnificent and breathtaking from the lake front of Friedrichshafen. Meersburg is one of the oldest walled towns in Germany and the old town and castle are quite worthwhile. There is so much more to do and see at this lake than in Liechtenstein.
I think Lichtenstein is a big waste of time--not much to see. Andreas is right, go to the Bodensee instead. Have a glass of wine or dinner at a lakefront cafe and watch the swans!
