Once we leave Switzerland, we have 3 "open" days in France before moving on to Paris. Colmar looks like a charming area to visit. Has anyone been there, or do you have other suggestions of places to see on the way to Paris? Thanks!
I second what Steve says. Colmar is terrific. It is relatively undiscovered but one of the most charming towns in France. Lots to see and do, many wonderful places to eat. And I highly recommend La Maison des Tetes as a place to stay. A wonderful hotel, right in the middle of everything.
Thank you both for your suggestions!
Colmar is fabulous. (We stayed there for a few days on our trip from Switzerland to Paris.)
With the time you have, you could certainly visit a different (and equally great) region of France, such as Burgundy or the Jura. Read about them if you feel like complicating your decision-making process for this trip!
But Alsace is a great choice, and probably the most logistically straightforward.
How many days would you all recommend in Colmar? We are traveling by train, and are considering spending a night somewhere else along the line, either in the Alsace or the Lorraine areas. Any suggestions? Thanks!
We enjoyed our short stay in Colmar and stayed at Chez Leslie (one of the recommended B&B's in the Rick Steves book) which we would highly recommend. On a quick visit, Colmar is worth two full days - one for the old town, itself and one for the route de vin collection of small towns nearby. Without a car, you could even bicycle to several of them. I don't know about public transport, but I am sure there is some option.
Thanks, Randy. That's exactly what I needed to know.
